HONESTY IN FRIENDSHIP
“Friends are honest with each other even if the truth hurts.”
Honesty is the best policy and yet in most cases dishonesty rules given that, ‘little white lies’ are kind of social lubricants, making everything run smoothly.
Friendship is an invaluable treasure that we all want to possess. To ensure that this is achieved, honesty is a necessity in maintaining trust. A true friend should be someone who is reliable, sincere and honest. Otherwise, anyone who is your friend and does not possess these three qualities is a pretender who is taking advantage of you to gain something at your own expense.
Relationships are built on confidence and are maintained when people are honest with each other. Trust in friendship is not an exemption. We all want a friend that we can empathize and share with. One can only experience this kind of friendship with a person that they have confidence in, which can only be through honesty. If your friend is not honest with you, who will? Honest friends build us and help us attain our potentials. They make us value our strength and embrace our weaknesses because they are not afraid to reproach us when we are wrong and commend us when we succeed.
Admittedly, telling the truth at times means taking risks of breaking an existing good relationship. Sometimes we fear telling our friends the truth because we think we might hurt their feelings and lose them. For example, you know your friend’s boyfriend is cheating on her. It may not be easy to bluntly tell her. One thing I believe is that, the truth will always set you free and where there is friendship there is forgiveness. If you share with her about her cheating boyfriend, it may result into two possible outcomes: she may be hurt but eventually realize that you were sincere and make the friendship bond stronger or, she may think evil of you and break the friendship ties with you, thus promoting the risks of honesty that most of us fear facing.
With no doubt, there is no friendship where dishonesty rules. It is important to have in mind that dishonest friends compete with each other while honest friends empower each other.
Thank you so much for reading and great weekend ahead!
